On May 28th, 2008 between 09:30 am and 6:30 pm at hall room № 8 of the National Culture Palace was held the National Conference of Bulgarian NGOs organized by the consultation team to the PHARE project "Development of civil society".
Over 300 NGOs, representatives from the public authorities and institutions, donor programs and corporate donors took part in the event and discussed issues of importance related to the management of NGO, charity initiatives, corporate donations as forms of funding for the non-government sector and legal regulations concerning NGO and their activities. In addition, two surveys were presented to the attention of the public: National representative sociological survey on the needs of NGO revealing that 58 % of the Bulgarian NGOs performed better in 2007 than in 2006, 21 % stayed at the same level as in 2006 and 21 % performed worse in 2007 than in 2006; and a Survey on the possibilities for improvement of the legal framework governing the activities of NGO. In addition, the non-government sector requested from the government to provide the initial funding for an Independent Fund for Civil Initiatives.
The head of the team of the European consultants on the project based on the EU PHARE program for development of the civil sector in Bulgaria Pau Solanila marked the importance of the non-government sector by saying that the representatives of the non-government organizations are the best ambassadors of Bulgaria who have the power to really confirm and popularize the position and the image of Bulgaria throughout the world.
The Social Activities and Practices Institute participated in the conference with the presentation of four of its projects based on PHARE program at the organized exhibition. All visitors had the opportunity to see pictures and video materials related to our projects and the overall work of the Institute. A number of representatives of all participating organizations showed interest in SAPI and our achievements so far.
The conference is the biggest forum of NGO in Bulgaria for the whole year and its main goal is to become an annual tradition in the future.
